If you haven’t guessed by now, this is all about 2012 and what it means. So what is 2012 all about? Well first off, it is NOT about doom and gloom or the end of the world. I cannot stress that enough. If you’re looking for Armageddon, you will not find it here because that’s not what 2012 is about, despite what you may have read elsewhere or have seen on TV or in the movies.
2012 is a prophecy that comes from several different ancient civilizations but more specifically, comes from the Mayan culture. On December 21st, 2012, the Mayan calendar will end. The question is, why would a calendar end? Most of us would surmise that it must mean the Mayans believed the world would end with the ending of their calendar? Well, not exactly – the end of the world as we know it, perhaps but NOT the end of the world as in the apocalypse.
What you may not have heard is that the Mayan calendar resets itself on December 22nd, 2012 and starts anew. And the reason for this? The Mayan calendar was setup to measure predictable astronomical cycles. The Mayans believed that at the end of a major cycle something HUGE would happen. This is why their calendar ends and then starts back up again.
Astronomical Galactic Alignment
Now that you understand the basics of the Mayan calendar, let’s talk about the astronomical science behind it. The end of the Mayan calendar marks a rare event referred to as galactic alignment. This event only occurs once every 26,000 years (approx.).
In astronomical definitions, the galactic alignment refers to the alignment of the December solstice sun with the galactic center (equator) of the Milky Way galaxy. The next galactic alignment will occur in December 2012. This alignment occurs on a cycle that is synchronized with the precession of the equinoxes. The Mayans were extremely advanced in the area of astronomy and as such, had great working knowledge of these cycles.
During an equinoxal precession, the Earth wobbles slowly on its axis and this causes the position of the equinox to shift backwards (precess) through the signs of the ecliptic. This occurs at the rate of roughly 71.5 years. The full precessional wobble completes every 26,000 years (approx.).
On the image below, the sun (far left) is the December solstice sun as it appeared about 3,000 years ago. The next sun (second from left) would be around 1500 years ago. And finally, the last sun (third from left) is the December solstice sun’s position in 2012 (approx.).
The Mayans great wisdom and knowledge of astronomy allowed them to create a long count calendar that precisely followed this 26,000 year cycle and broke it up into smaller sub-cycles of about 5,125 years.

I won’t go into the specifics of the Mayan calendar in terms of how it works as it is not necessary for this discussion. What is important is that the precession of equinoxes is scientifically based information and can be found in any astronomy book.
Moreover, the effects of these precessions have a great impact on Earth and thusly, have an effect on the planet’s living things including us. This is because of the very energetically charged center of our galaxy and the effects of that energy on everything that enters the galactic center’s plane.
The Dawning of a New Age
The ancient peoples of Earth knew what was to come in 2012 and as such they all predicted a major Earth change around the year 2012 that would impact all life inhabiting the planet at that time. It is unclear how they came about this knowledge but this knowledge became a staple of their existence.
As the Earth enters into the age of Aquarius (see below), also known as the Golden Age, the Mayan’s believe a new beginning will take place and this is why the Mayan’s long count calendar ends in 2012 and marks the start of a new calendar.
